What is motivation? Behavioral change through technology, WiSe 2019/20

Behavior change is something everyone knows from everyday life. First, every now and then people want to change their own behaviors. For example, eating less sweets or being more sportive are intentions to change one's behavior. But people also try to change the behavior of others. For instance, people try to convince their roommates to clean up the apartment more often or they argue with their partner to go for a stroll rather than watching TV all night long. Whatever comes to your mind, behavior change is something most people are familiar with.

However, people feel uncomfortable when it comes to the design of things that intend to change behavior. But behavior change is at the heart of interaction design. Interaction designers define how people behave through the functionalities (and the functionalities omitted) of an interactive product. Hence, behavior change became an enormous topic in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI).

In this literature seminar, you will read a choice of texts addressing behavior change in HCI. However, you will also design your own prototypical concepts.
